Mad for Plaid

Hooray for hump day!! I dunno about y’all but I am in need of a weekend already – this week has been bananas!! The nesting phase has absolutely kicked in and I spent the last two days putting up Christmas, finishing the nursery, packing the final hospital bag necessities, and moving around all the furniture in my house. No joke, my glass and marble bar even got moved (because the location and setup of my BAR totally matters right before bringing a newborn home)…my big ol’ preggo butt took it apart shelf by shelf and carried each (ridiculously heavy) piece to it’s new location. I’m sure my OB would be thrilled. Also finding new homes in my house: my wingback chairs, hallway table, stendig calendar, Harper’s standing nursery lamp, two giant mirrors (switched for shape), and my 9 foot christmas tree. Ba-BAM! Mama’s been busy. Someone who has NOT been busy, at all, lately is my baby. I have now had Non-Stress Tests done at both my weekly check-ups and will continue having them weekly until she arrives because she is a sloth. I think she’s just about out of room and can’t hardly move around anymore, but my doctor is closely monitoring her because of it.

In other news, I have a very special post for you today thanks to P+P’s newest Fashion contributor (and total babe), Emily! You might remember Em from this (super old!) post where we styled Cobalt Blue together. She is gorgeous, has such amazing taste, and the absolute sweetest personality to go with it. Go check out her blog, The Style Hunter if you’re not already following her. You can also find her on Instagram, where she posts tons of great OOTD’s.

There are very few things I can honestly say are staples in my wardrobe. I love to switch things up, make unexpected pairings and take advantage of the fact that trends change every season. Adding items to your wardrobe that will make an impact are my specialty. Currently these items include, but are not limited to…

1. Gigantic, slightly obnoxious sized baubles. Statement necklaces are a favorite.

2. A good leather top. I’ve currently got a short sleeved and a crop top version.

3. A crimson colored lip. Or really any bright lip.

4. A wool fedora.

5. FUR. Fur vest. Fur jacket. Fur lined hoodie. (faux fur of course!)

The only way these show stopping pieces can reach their full potential is by the great basics that become a canvas. For example, in this look, denim and a great flannel plaid with a neutral bootie make the other pieces shine.

If you find a pair of jeans that speak to you, hug every curve and make you think they were literally painted on, do your Superbowl touchdown dance in the fitting room. Make sure your booty looks good. Give yourself a pat on the back and then buy multiple pairs. My newest favorite has to be the Lookout High-Rise from J. Crew. They suck you in, and give every one I’ve seen try them on that hourglass figure. And who doesn’t want that?!

This fall, and every fall I think, plaid is always a staple. It just works. And this one, also from J. Crew (shocker), does not disappoint. For those of y’all that don’t know, I am a vPS (very personal stylist) for J. Crew, so basically I fall in LOVE with everything they do, the second it hits the floor. And let me tell you, this flannel sold out at my store in a matter of days. INSANE. But it’s that good.

What are some of your staples and some of your more trendy items for fall?!

Shelley: DIY Wreath / “Swag”

Happy Monday Friends!
I’m so excited to introduce you to Shelley, from Crazy Wonderful, who has joined Playdates + Pearls as our DIY & Design contributor! You probably remember her from last weeks guest post where I spilled the contents of my bag over on her blog. If you want to read more about Shelley and the other P+P contributors you can check them out here. They have so much good stuff in store for you!!
She brought her A-Game today with a super simple, and gorgeous, DIY “swag” which I now NEED. Hope you love her as much as I do!
I’m struggling with how quickly Christmas is approaching this year. With all the Halloween candy still around (actually, I’m shocked we still have any with all that I’ve been eating) I feel like it should still be October. But, ready or not, it’s coming!
This year I wanted to do something other than the traditional wreath for our front door. The windows along the front of our house will each have a wreath so putting another on the front door seemed overkill. I decided to go with a swag instead.
If you want to make your own, here’s how I did it!
I found my swag at Hobby Lobby (50% off!). I believe these are meant to be pulled open and draped over a door/entry, but I just kept the long pieces bent down and later bent the wire even more so the long pieces would be closer together.
I tied a large burlap ribbon and attached it to the top with floral wire. Leave yourself extra length for the ribbon tails for the next step.
I wanted the ribbon tails to be pinned in place so I wrapped floral wire around different sections of the ribbon and then attached the ribbon to the swag with the remaining length of floral wire. Ignore the white ribbon. I ended up switching it out for the striped ribbon later.

I then stuck in some glittery floral sprays behind the bow and attached some large plastic ornaments to the front. All using more of that floral wire to keep everything in place.
Hang that bad boy up and enjoy!
Once I get all of our Christmas decorations out I’ll run some lit garland around the door to dress it up more.
Here are some other images of swags I’m loving. Most of which make me want to completely do a redo of my own :D This first one in particular I can’t get enough of. They’re HUGE!!!
via
These would be simple to put together using cuttings off the bottom of a fresh cut Christmas tree.
via
Definitely check out the entire outdoor decor from this house. She even shows you how she did it. I think I’m going to add a strip of ribbon to hang my swag from after seeing this.
via
Absolutely adore the simplicity of the pine cones hanging from simple ribbon.
via
And this one won me over with it’s stripe ribbon (can’t. get. enough!).
via
So what do ya think. Are you going to get your “swag”ger on this year??? I know, lame attempt at a joke but I couldn’t help myself!

Mommy of two amazing little boys, Amanda has always found herself lost in décor and decorating, from paint colours to wallpaper to show homes for fun on a Sunday afternoon it has been her passion from a very young age. Amanda remembers rearranging her room on a regular just to get that clean and crisp feel, asking her Mom to wash her bedding way more often than it needed to be whilst fluffing her pillows before they had a chance to go flat. I Caved…

image via

Mama needed her coffee, folks. Someone was going to get hurt today otherwise…so I caved and I did exactly what the Whole30 gods say not to do…I made the Paleo coffee creamer that turns boring, black, bitter coffee into a sweet, dreamy, cup of “oh hells yes!”

Go ahead. Judge me. I was judging myself while cooking up this coffee creamer concoction, but once it hit my lips there was no turning back. Some of us have more self control than others; I have none.

On the bright side, it’s still dairy free, sugar free, and isn’t laced with chemicals like the bottles of stuff I hoarded before.

I followed this recipe, with a few changes.

8 dates (pitted & chopped) – boil in 1/2 cup of water for 10 minutes.

1 can Organic Coconut Milk

Dash of Cinnamon

1 Egg

Combine in a blender or food processor until smooth. Store in a mason jar or other airtight container for up to 4 days in the fridge.

If you’re like me you’ll be a little skeptical when you start handling the dates, which resemble boogery raisins, but I promise you it’s worth it!!

Jumping On The Whole30 Bandwagon

Hello, and happy Tuesday!

Guess what crazy idea my husband and I had last week? Oh, no big deal, just that we should jump on the Whole30 bandwagon and test our self control…in my last few weeks of pregnancy…when I should be doing nothing but binge eating chocolate. Why do I do this to myself?! Well, here’s why – my body is nearly 90. Yes, 90 years old, and trying to fall apart on me every single day. Bored yet? No? Ok, then let me continue my rant about my old ass in much greater detail…don’t get too excited…

When I was in my early teens I started having some very unusual lady issues. Bet you’re really excited about this post now, aren’t ya?! ;-) Unlike most people, I would go months without my cycle, which concerned my mom. We visited my gyno (sooooo many horror stories about me at the gyno/OB, we’ll have to save those gems for another day) and he decided to draw blood and test all my hormone levels. One came back very elevated, which resulted in an MRI of my brain, which resulted in the diagnosis that I have a very small (we’re talking pea sized) tumor in my pituitary gland. Are you hearing Arnold Schwarzenegger’s voice saying the word “tumor” in your head right now? Very few people know all this weird stuff about me, but almost every single one who does has made the Arnold “tumor” joke…welcome to the club.

Ok, so I’m a bit of a teenage freakshow, right? It’s actually not a big deal AT ALL, and requires nothing more than a daily pill to reduce that imbalanced hormone level. No tumor removal, or anything crazy like that. It just sits there, throwing levels out of whack, and is harmless. Easy peasy.

Fast forward a few more years to age 16. I start having swollen, painful joints, and find that daily activities are unusually challenging for me. Like brushing my teeth or hair are a very serious task, and take me 20 minutes. I go to my family physician, who pretty much blows me off, and suggests I have what most “dramatic teenagers” have – anxiety and depression. Um, nope, I was dramatic at that age for sure, but not depressed. So I kept going back…and back…and back. Finally I was referred to a rheumatologist for testing of my joints (why I wasn’t referred after appointment #1 is still a mystery to me). After a single appointment it was very clear that I had juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, which is quite rare, and really shitty. Basically it means my body is producing antibodies that attack my joints, causing pain, swelling, and over time permanent damage to my joints. Over the following 10+ years I’ve tried a little bit of everything to “treat” my auto-immune disease – pain killers, immune-suppressors, injections, etc. If it’s on the market, especially if it comes with a fancy commercial (humira ring any bells?) then I’ve tried it.

Since both of those completely random diseases weren’t enough, I was diagnosed with another autoimmune disease 2 years ago called Sjogrens. I don’t have a whole lot to say about this one, other than it causes me to have dry eyes and dry mouth, but in the grand scheme of things it’s just annoying.

Now let me tell you something really awesome…

When I’m pregnant, everything stops. Literally, it just stops. It’s amazing. My joints slowly stop hurting, I get off of all medications, and I live a completely normal life. It’s magic. The downside? As soon as I deliver this sweet little babe, all my symptoms will start to return, namely my arthritis, and it comes back with a vengeance! Within a week of delivering Camryn I was miserable with pain from my joints. It can feel almost debilitating. For someone who’s never experienced it, I don’t know how to put it in words…imagine how sore you felt the day after a really, really, really intense workout – that’s almost relatable. The obvious answer is always “take medicine”, but I enjoy nursing my babies, and introducing such harsh drugs into their milk supply is just not an option for me, but changing my diet to reduce inflammation is!

Yes, this post has a point, I’m just taking the incredibly long and round about way of getting to it.

Here’s where Whole30 comes in – by cutting out dairy, sugar, and grains I can significantly reduce the amount of swelling in my joints. Some people have claimed to heal their bodies naturally through their diet! Now, you know how much I love me some desserts, coffee creamer with a side of coffee, and bread layered with cheese layered with more bread and cheese. Those are my love languages people, especially the last 9 months. But with my due date quickly approaching I decided that I needed to at least try to take control of my body and it’s craziness and do my part as a patient until my doctors can do their part when I finish nursing. So we started Whole30. If you live on Mars and have never heard of Whole30 or it’s very similar sister, Paleo, then you can read more about it here. I am using the next 30 days as a jumpstarter into a cleaner, healthier, more simplistic way of eating. Not a diet. Not at all a diet – I have no goals of losing any weight, and am eating tons and tons of food (without the snack restrictions that typical Whole30 followers adhere to). I am simply eating foods that fall within the Whole30 shopping list.

My meals for today:

Breakfast: 2 boiled eggs, organic ham, blackberries, and black coffee. The coffee was the only thing that sucked, but I’ll get over it.

Snack: Plum & a handful of pistachios

lunch

Lunch: Giant sized chicken salad (my eyes are bigger than my stomach!) with tomatoes, olives, avocado, and mixed greens (kale, spinach, chard). I also shared a small side of sweet potato with the hubs – I could live off sweet potatoes, they are my jam!!

dinner

I forgot to snap a pic at first, so excuse the half eaten steak. My husband makes the best steaks ever!!!

Dinner: A steak the size of my head (again, my portion control could use a little work…I’ll address that after little lady arrives and I actually care) steamed broccoli with garlic, little peppers (I could eat these all day!!), and the hubs and I shared a slice of watermelon and a side of sweet potatoes.

As you can imagine, based off my serving sizes, I never once felt hungry. I think whenever you start a new “diet” (again, I am not trying to lose weight, I just want to be really clear before anyone jumps down my throat and accuses me of malnutrition while preggo) you automatically think of nothing but eating, as if you’re going to be deprived, so instead you binge. Kinda like when you think about the gym, or exercising, you automatically think how much you want to eat a big slice of chocolate cake…wait, is that just me?!

So there you have it, day 1 of my whole30 journey. Pretty easy and delicious, and honestly I’m looking forward to the next 29 days. Are any of you Whole30 peeps? Have any good recipes for me? One of my BFF’s, Jenn (she has the cutest little family, you should definitely check her out), introduced me to whole30 and has shared some yummy recipes on Pinterest which I’ve added to my Food board if you want to check those out! Thanks Jenn!! :-) Oh, and if you want to follow her on Pinterest (she’s a better pinner than I am, to be honest…she also has great taste in pretty much everything else too) than you can find her here.

Phew! Longest post ever! I’ll keep sharing my food journey with you, and let you know how my body responds to less pizza and take-out, and more apples and kale. I’ll definitely share any of my favorite recipes with y’all too – share any you have with me too!!

XO – Samantha

Oh-So-Preggo

Hello Lovelies! I thought that my slackerness this week (sorry if you visited tuesday- thursday and found a whole lotta nothin’) should end on a bump update, because honestly, that’s all I’ve got going on in life these days! :-) I am slowly approaching week 35 and feeling more large and in charge than I ever remember feeling with Camryn. The biggest (other than my actual size) pregnancy symptom I seem to be battling is the hormonal roller coaster…I am up & down so fast it gives me whiplash. I had my hair done yesterday, and it seriously looks fine, but it wasn’t exactly how I had envisioned it so I came home and cried. Yes, I actually cried, over my hair, which looked fine, and can be easily changed without any fuss at all so I had no real reason to be upset. I’ve lost my damn mind. I had the ultimate bad day on Wednesday and ended up with tea in bed and read Gone Girl for about 3 hours. It was exactly what I needed!

Here are a few recent bump pics (in case you aren’t stalking my Instagram and aren’t already sick of seeing my belly over and over and over again already.)

preggo

“Hey Girl” tee is from Asos, and the heart glasses are River Island (also purchased from Asos but no longer available). And my 3 year old takes the best pics!!! preggo2 preggo3

preggo4

B&W dress & bow belt are from Target.
preggo5

preggo6 Whenever I post bare belly pictures on IG I get comments from strangers, usually tagging one of their friends, and saying “Dude, what happened to her belly button?!” First of all, BAHAHAHAHA!! I pee my pants laughing every single time. Second, it disappeared around week 30. ;-)

The nursery is still in shambles, we haven’t put her carseat in my car yet, and I don’t have anything packed for the hospital, but when this tiny lady is ready to come out we’ll be more than ready to greet her – prepared or not! You hear that Harper?! Mommy says “GET OUT!!!”

Product Review: Younique 3D Fiber Lash Mascara

Lets talk about a product that I wanted so badly to hate…NOT because I hate beautiful, long thick lashes. NOT because I’m opposed to paying a for a higher-end product. NOT because it requires an extra 3 minutes of my time to apply. I assumed, and quite honestly wanted to hate this product because it always came across as “kitchy”, and only sold by pushy and slimy sales people, and because those creepy eye pictures that you see on Instagram of the spider lashes straight up freak me out. Well folks, I tried it out for myself, and even the skeptic in me was a little wow’d!

Ready for that creepy eye picture? I’ll do you one better and add in my absolute best serial killer stare. Be afraid.

creepy lash selfie EEK!!

There is absolutely NO WAY to make that not weird. Trust me, I tried. *Face turns 18 shades of red*

On my right eye I’m wearing 1 coat of my Lash Blast waterproof mascara, and on my left eye I’m wearing 1 coat of the Younique 3D Fiber Lash mascara. (For full disclosure, I did tightline my left eye with black eyeliner) The mascara was easier to apply than I had anticipated; First you apply a thin coat of the transplanting gel, then you immediately brush on the fibers while the transplant gel is still wet, and then you seal the fibers with another thin coat of transplanting gel.

PROS: I found the mascara to be extremely effective, easy to use, a rich black color, and removed similarly to my waterproof mascaras (using Clinique Take The Day Off Balm – my everyday makeup remover)

CONS: This is not the cheapest mascara (retailing at $29), it does take slightly more effort than a traditional mascara, and because it sets similarly to a waterproof mascara it might be harder to remove if you’re used to traditional mascaras. Also, I think for many people the carrying case is an added benefit, but because I travel frequently I prefer minimal packaging and found this to be a little large and clunky. I ditched the box and just threw both tubes into my makeup bag. Camryn is currently using my box as a purse. :-)

TIPS: Do one eye at a time. To avoid getting clumpy spider lashes only apply a THIN layer of transplanting gel. If you find that you’re having fall-down of the fibers then you need to seal them better. Try applying two coats of the gel after applying your fibers. I also used a clean spooly brush to comb through my lashes at the end. If you curl your lashes, like me, you might find that as you build them up they touch your lid and transfer product. To solve this problem I busted out the good ol’ spoon and held it against my lid while applying the transplant gel (only if I was wearing eyeshadow, otherwise I just went to town applying the gel and used a makeup-remover-soaked q-tip to clean my lids after).

Here’s how the product arrives:

Fibers (yes, it’s weird putting fiber-glass-looking fibers so close to your eye the first time…you get over it!)

Ready for the best part about trying this mascara? If you hate it, you can send it back. Yes, seriously. They want you to love it or get your money back. You can also receive free shipping with all orders over $100. Oh, and did I mention the mascara is meant to last 3-4 months? MONTHS!! I loved hearing that because I’m a stay-at-home-mom, and I don’t exactly need pow-pow lashes on a daily basis, so knowing it will still be in good condition 2 weeks (or months) from now when I need it is a huge bonus!

If you’re interested in trying out this mascara, you can order here. I received mine from the absolute sweetest (and not at all pushy) younique rep, Kayla. She answered tons of my questions (like, “are you sure this shit is safe? It looks like fiberglass.” And “What am I doing wrong, I got the fiberglass stuff in my eye!” Hahaha Sorry Kayla, I was a newbie!) I am not receiving any compensation for telling you about her, nor will I receive any free merchandise or compensation from your purchases through her – I just genuinely like her and have had a good experience working with her. Kayla and I actually met initially on Instagram, so you can go stalk her there if you want too. She has a super cute little boy!! ;-)

If you’re interested in becoming a Younique consultant like Kayla be sure to contact her for additional information. The setup fee is $99, and there’s no monthly fee’s.

If you try this, it’s only fair that I get to see your serial killer eye selfies, so make sure you tag me!!

Laura Dro Designs

Good Morning!

I had so many questions about the floral print I featured on my Instagram a few weeks ago, and I’m so excited to finally be sharing about it, and the gorgeous lady who made it, with all of you! Meet Laura, the artist behind Laura Dro Designs. Laura’s art is very bright, fun, and energetic, and she clearly does not shy away from colors (a girl after my own heart!) All of her art is easily transitioned from room to room, and can be layered with other art to create the perfect gallery wall, or stand alone as the spotlight of that space. Laura also designs an amazing collection of lucite trays that have me swooning big time! You’re gonna wanna add one to your christmas list, trust me.

I met Laura through Lindsay from Hattan Home, and she graciously offered to send me one of her prints, and I immediately jumped at the opportunity to style (literally ANY of) her art! I decided on her 8×10 “Peony In Coral” print because it played well with the colors in Harper’s nursery where I was hoping to use it. It ended up being exactly what the room needed. I had geometric fabrics, “word art”, and quirky animal prints, and the florals really added the touch of feminine to the space that was missing.

Again, you all know how much I love beautiful packages, so when this arrived I was so stinkin’ excited!

Laura Dro

Laura Dro 3 Laura Dro2

You may remember seeing this gorgeous print paired alongside the darling glass piggy from Hattan Home, but this is not its final home. I updated Harper’s nursery board for you to get a sneaky peek at where this print will live, but you’re gonna have to wait until the room is finished before seeing it in its entirety. :-)

Screen Shot 2014-10-15 at 1.14.50 PM

Art always seems to be the hardest thing for people to choose when decorating their homes, so I also designed a chic bedroom board as inspiration. Just because you’re using florals doesn’t mean the entire room has to scream “girly”. Pair the prints with blacks, whites, greys, and golds for a masculine touch, and cheeky pillows are always a fun touch! The best thing about this print is the vast color palette it allows you to design around. The print also comes in 2 sizes, so play with scale and decide which would be most fitting for your space – I would use the larger size over nightstands (you’ll typically have lamps on your nightstand, so consider their height when choosing), but smaller when pairing it with another piece of art, like in the nursery. The best thing about Laura’s prints are their affordability. You don’t have to break the bank to get the wow factor!

Thank you again to Laura Dro Designs!!

Pumpkin Patch & Catching Up!

Hello Friends!! I’m sure you’ve noticed that as I get closer and closer to my due date, my presence here is slowly getting more spaced out. I have absolutely no intentions of abandoning my fun little corner of the blogosphere, I’m just becoming more focused on the present and spending quality time with my big girl before my little girl breaks up the party. :-) You can continue to expect 2-3 posts weekly instead of the daily posts that I used to do. You can also always catch me on Instagram – I find it far easier to keep you all in the loop on my daily chaos over there! In the coming month I’ll be introducing you to some amazing bloggers who have so graciously volunteered to be contributors. They are quite literally a few of my favorite bloggers, and they write some of the only blogs that I manage to keep up with on a daily basis anymore. Ok, enough shop talk, lets look at pictures of my cute kid, shall we..and maybe a few bumps?! Oh, and my husband (who just finished a lemon-lime sno-cone and has a sickly looking tongue. Mine was dragons blood flavor…what flavor is that even?!) pumpkin patch 3 pumpkin patch pumpkin patch2 pumpkin patch4

This last picture kills me!! She saw a teeny tiny dragon fly land next to her and she freaked out, and threw her pumpkin at it. I’ve ruined this child with my fear of spiders and creepy crawlers. Camryn is wearing her Cray Cray tee from Little Big Dreamers, skinny jeans from good ol’ Target, and Hunter wellies.

I went in on Friday & again yesterday for baby appointments and everything with little miss Harper is great! Other than the fact that I’m still getting sick on an almost daily basis, my pregnancy is progressing as it should. She currently weighs 3 pounds 15 oz. and is measuring at 32 weeks today (a few days behind my actual date), but her legs are measuring over 2 weeks ahead! I grow babies with long legs, chunky cheeks, and no hair! Ha! I had lost about 5 pounds, but gained all 5 back in the last week, so that’s a really good sign. The new nausea med I’m taking has been really helping reduce how often I’m getting sick. HOORAY!! Just 7 more weeks, or less.

Yesterday I took Camryn to the park to enjoy the amazing weather we’ve been having here in Austin, and we picnicked and played for awhile.

She is lucky enough to get to be a brand rep for our sweet friend (and blog sponsor) Jayme, who owns Kate & James! She’s wearing her Ello Love Pullover, Susie’s custom shorts, and Freshly Picked Moccs. I’m so jealous of her wardrobe, it hurts. ;-)

Hope you’ve all been having a great week! Come visit me on IG today and enter the awesome loop giveaway I’m in! $25 Paypal cash is up for grabs!!
