New Year, New Closet – Get Organized!!

Everyone that likes a clean organized space put your hands up, this one is for you!The New Year always makes me itch to get organize. I know I’m not alone. All the Christmas stuff is put away and the house feels open and fresh. You just want to keep that feeling going.

If you haven’t already started your organizing frenzy, Samantha is going to kick you in gear by giving one lucky reader a $50 gift card to The Container Store!!!!

Pretty darn good amiright?!

I love that store. Seriously, I could spend hours in there. And I did just that the other day. To feed my need to get things organized, I finally tackled my daughter’s closet. She has a really nice space with natural light, but it wasn’t being used well at all.

BEFORE
It was a hot. mess. All of her clothes were crammed together on a rack so her Barbie toys could be kept below instead of in the playroom (away from her little brother who likes to put things in his mouth). She could never get dressed on her own because she couldn’t reach her clothes. The biggest pain ever. The other side of the closet was all wasted space.
To make her closet more functional we added in some organization game changers from The Container Store.
AFTER

I think the biggest help was adding the double hanging closet rod on the wall that use to be all wasted space. Her clothes are more spread out having the second row, and she can easily get to them on her own now. I also gave her a stool to get to the top row. No more, “Mom! I need help!!!”
I also added an additional shelf to that side of the closet. Now she has a display shelf and another for bins that can corral her craft supplies and other “treasures” she can’t bring herself to part with.
Before I forget, those fun gold heart decals are from Urban Walls. You can find them here.
On the left side I brought in a stacking shoe rack which works so much better than the hanging shelves we used to have for shoes. There was enough room to also give her a spot for her jewelry. The difference in having her favorite pieces displayed verses all mashed and tangled up in a jewelry box is night and day! The little bracelet stand makes her feel so special too :)
We still needed to keep her Barbie stuff in the closet, but made it less of an eye sore boy making a little curtain to hang from the rod. When she’s not playing she can close it off.

Barbies even have their own spot now in a hanging shoe organizer on the back of her closet door. This is HUGE people! This is one of those things I first saw on Pinterest. Whoever thought of this is a genius!

And just because side-by-sides are fun.
If you’re needing to do something similar, here are the workhorses I used in her space.
Now it’s your turn to get organized! For a chance to win $50 to The Cont ainer Store use the Rafflecopter below!
One winner will be announced February 1st. Good luck everyone!!!

Love this closet makeover – the heart accents and the jewelry space were really cute touches. I am due with my 2nd boy in May and in desperate need to get both boys closets organized. Thanks for the giveaway :)

I too LOVE The Container Store, great place for ideas and supplies! This year is the year I’m seriously going to tackle my craft/sewing/office/everything else room! Really needs some organization in hopes that I can find things in a minute instead of an hour! Great closet makeover, really cute for a girl.

    • I have one of those rooms to. The dreaded guest room :D It’s only clean when we have guests over and even then it’s like, “be careful in the closet. You might get mauled by all of my craft/sewing stuff.”

  4. Aja says:

It looks great! I’m so jealous of the window in there :) I feel like my whole house needs some organizing magic, but right now I need to tackle the paper/office situation. It’s out of control!

Love this. Such a beautiful space. I have a coat closet that is literally an avalanche when you open it. I hold my breath when I need something from in there. This would come in handy!

  10. Debra C says:

I need to organize my kitchen.

  11. I need to organize my closet, I seem to neglect the spaces that only I use and always focus on organizing spaces that everyone uses.

  12. Alexandra Scroggins says:

Ahhhh!!!! I love this closet! I have a 6 year old who as of now has to display her pretty Barbies all in rows in a sitting position out in the open so the shoe organizer idea is going to be a lifesaver, well in this case a Barbie-saver! I’m also loving the extra shelf for the shoes, it’s going to make the closet look less messy by having them off the floor. Thank you for the ideas!!

    • Thank you Alexandra! The Barbie organizer is my favorite in her closet. She LOVE having them organized and actually enjoys picking up when she’s done playing with them now. It’s a miracle :D

  13. Joanna Murnan says:

My daughter’s closet needs the most work – I need to figure out how to make room for the new baby’s things while still keeping her stuff organized!

    Love this transformation! So beautiful!

  14. This right here is the kid closet dreams are made of. Our girls share a closet and I hate it! I’d be all over making it function better.

  15. Melissa H says:

Great and easy fix to make such a huge impact – I need to do something like this for our spare bedroom closet that has become the catch all for storage totes of clothes, holiday stuff, and my husband’s army gear

  20. Alia says:

    Closets! Big time

  21. leah says:

I love how this closet came out! The little heart decals are so cute! I’m now inspired to tackle the twins’ room which desperately needs my attention. They sleep in our room and hangout in the living room, so their room has been completely ignored. It was so cute and clean when they were born and now it’s the dumping ground for anything baby! Ugh. Now if only I could find the time ;)

  22. We just started full timing in our RV! I love it and it actually has surprisingly a large amount of storage. But it’s just not useful storage! Half is too high for me and I need a larger step stool. I need different sized baskets than the ones I kept in our house. ANd all the shelves are super deep and dark so I need some lighting and pull out baskets. I’ve been meaning to go there and give half of my paycheck up anyway so this could always help lol!

  23. Funny, but my daughter’s closet is what I need to organize most!! It’s similar to this closet, so I’m looking forward to using these ideas to tidy up her space and make it more user-friendly. And those gold hearts are the first thing I’m getting!

  24. Amy says:

Love the closet! Adding the wall decals gives it such a cute look! I need to tackle my guest room closets desperately!

  25. Tabitha says:

    Great job Shelley!

  26. Love all of these ideas! The jewelry organization is adorable. I have the gold urban wall polka dot decals in Emily’s room! xo

  27. Beth says:

  28. Amy says:

The closet makeover is magazine worthy! My master closet needs some love!

  29. Danica H says:

My closet!!!! My husband has the master bedroom closet, so my closet is the one in the guest bedroom! Sigh…
    **hangs head in shame**

  30. Lindsay says:

Pretty much all of the closets in my house need love, but our Master closet is the worst! Thanks!!

  37. I need to organize the closet in our office/soon-to-be nursery. It just has a wire shelf system and I want 2 layers of hanging clothes and shelves for baby organization!

  38. OMGoodness, your little girls have more clothes than I do! You killed the organization – it looks beyond anything I could do in one day. I bet you’ll be getting a lot of calls/emails from friends & family with some special closet re-org requests! xoxo, Bethann

  39. Lauren says:

  46. Natasha S says:

I would like to update my pantry.

  47. Ananya Gupta says:

My wardrobe is calling for some organisation attention.

  48. Melissa H says:

Such an easy remod of a closet can make a huge difference, this is on my list to tackle as well for our 1 1/2 year old son Hayes’ bedroom, as well as redoing/upgrading/updating to his new “bigger” boy room (I refuse to say big boy bc he is our 2nd son, will always be our Baby Hayes) — I also can’t wait to see your updates with your Jenny Lind bed on the Blog, I has the most phenomenal Craigslist find last year when I snagged one in mint condition — I was stuck on white, but now pretty much set on Black, so if you do black, or any color for that matter.. I’ll be eagerly awaiting the finished results before starting mine in a few months.

  49. Julie Majer says:

Pretty much every closet in our house could use a little Container Store help. (Doesn’t almost everyones? LOL!) Definitely my kitchen pantry though. Its not large enough and there isn’t a light in it so it makes it difficult to find anything after dark.
