Talia Handler Art + A Peek at My New Hair!

I met the sweetest, and most crazy talented artist, on Instagram. Her name is Talia Handler (@taliahandlerart), and she went to Parsons School of Design, and dreams of being a childrens wear designer. She draws and paints the most beautiful portraits using photos straight from your IG feed if you want.

I followed her for a couple days, and knew quickly that I wanted her to paint Camryn, so I e-mailed her and let her choose any photo from my Instagram. About a week later, the first sketch popped up in my feed, and then the painting, followed by a close up. I was dying; they turned out even better than I had ever imagined. The painting is so detailed, and rich in color, and blows my mind everytime I look at it. I was so happy that she chose a fun picture of Camryn, and know that it will forever be a conversation starter when people see it. I’m calling it “The blue mustache lady”. :-)

My husband has already claimed it for his office, and it’s currently being matted and framed. I guess I’ll just have to order another picture for myself. :-)

If you are interested in commissioning a piece from Talia or just want to see more of her awesome work, check our her Instagram feed, and her website. You can also e-mail her at trhandle@gmail.com. She’s super nice and will gladly answer any questions you might have. She also offers multiple size options for portraits, and will paint your animals or anything else you might like. These portraits would be an amazing gift for family, and friends, brides, and especially for a new mom. I’m pretty sure my sister-in-law is getting one of these of my teeny tiny nephew when he arrives.

Go say hi, and oohh and ahhh over her art! She also posts pictures of her clothing designs, which look awesome, and I can’t wait for her to launch her line.

In other news…

I had my hair done yesterday! I started posting sneaky pics on IG, but wanted to save the “big reveal” for all of you today. I went to milk + honey salon (and spa) and spent wayyyy too much time showing my stylist pictures and trying to explain what I wanted. Yes, I’m that girl…you know, the one who says stupid things like “I want my hair ombre, but I want it to look really natural”, or “I want to cut my hair, and change things up, but I don’t want to lose any length”…helpful, right? She had me pull up my “hairspiration” pics, and pretty much knew exactly what to do from there. My hair is crazy THICK and LONG, and it turns into a giant knot if you even look at it the wrong way, so she had her work cut out for her.

She started by back combing my hair (I knew right then she was going to have a hell of a time getting those knots out), and then applied 3 different colors/bleaches (I dunno what they were, sorry!) to the ends. I looked like a tin foiled lion for awhile. After she rinsed the bleach, she had to brush out all the knots…she had to call in reinforcement, and it still took awhile, and did not feel awesome on my scalp. I joked that it was a form of torture. ;-) I do not think that madness happens to most people, so don’t be scared to try this, it’s just my hair.

Because I was so nervous, and scared of anything too dramatic, she blended the color really well and kept most of the color to the very ends. I’m in love with how it turned out. IN LOVE.

I made my hubs take pics for me last night, and it was dark outside already, so crappy, indoor (flash) pics are just what you’re gonna have to live with. Ready?!

ombreback

Pretty close to my inspiration picture, right?! …and here’s a picture without flash. ombrenoflash

The lighting was creating a red-ish shadow (you can see it on my face and arms too) so my hair looks slightly more auburn/brassy in this pic than it does in real life. She faded the color in so well that you can hardly notice how blonde the ends are, but if I hold them up to my roots it’s a HUGE difference in color. I’ll post more pictures on IG for you all soon. I’ll also update with a photo of our framed blue mustache lady soon.

I hope you’re all having a great week!

Long Weekend

Hello Darlings!

So sorry for the lapse in posts, I treated myself to a much needed long weekend. Here’s what I was up to while I was gone…

lustlist1

lustlist2

Valentines at our house was low-key, but my husband did surprise Camryn and I with flowers. We each got 2 dozen roses (he can’t help himself…despite my dislike of vday) and I split mine into 2 bouquets and used my Alice + Olivia for Starbucks mug as an adorable vase.

lustlist4

We took Auntie coffee because she manages a spa, and Valentines at a spa is a little crazy. Nothing says “I love you” like a latte.

lustlist5

Camryn has been loving her new red moccs too. In fact, I’m struggling to get her to wear any other shoes. lustlist6 Daddy upgraded cars, and Camryn has taken a liking to it. Hey, at least she’s not texting while driving, and she’s wearing her seat belt! Also, how cute are those gladiator sandals? Target strikes again! lustlist10 I go in today to have my hair cut and colored. I’m not the type of person who does a lot with their hair. I get it trimmed “just an inch” and keep it pretty much the same all the time. To say I’m nervous would be an understatement. I’m planning to have it layered more, and the dry ends trimmed, but the big plan is adding a few highlights around my face and ombre-ing the ends. Eek!! (The above photo is my inspiration) I’ll post before and after pics for all of you tomorrow. Wish me luck. :-)

How was everyone’s Valentines, and weekend?

XO – Samantha

P.S. If you don’t get enough of me here, go check out my pinterest. I’ve been a pinning machine lately!

Playroom Organization

Hello Darlings, how were all of your weekends? Mine was spent helping my sister pack, making a quick trip to Ikea (so, not that quick, because it’s Ikea), and watching the Superbowl. I may or may not have gotten bored during the Superbowl and instead played on the computer. On the bright side, I finally made my blog button! Hooray! I love getting to cross things off my to-do list, it’s just so damn satisfying. Fellow bloggers, if you also have that daunting “Create A Blogger Button” task on your to-do list, I will be putting together a step by step tutorial for you ASAP. I spent a few hours compiling all the information needed to create a button, and the steps that I took to create my own, and will put it all into one quick post for all of you. Hopefully I can save you some time and hair pulling. Hallelujah! For any of you that aren’t bloggers, and are wondering what I’m talking about, a blog button is just an image that links back to your blog and allows other bloggers to support you and introduce their readers to you (and vice-versa). Blog buttons are what introduced me to most of the blogs that I’ve been reading for years now.

In other news….

My daughter’s playroom has been overrun by toys, and is in desperate need of a facelift. It needs to be organized, and old toys that are no longer of interest to her need to be donated.

I started by dragging my husband to Ikea to buy 2 of the Expedit shelves in high gloss white.

I ordered 8 of these Rugby Striped Bins to hold small items like cars and trains, puzzles, etc.

She already owns the Ikea Lack side table in high gloss white which is the perfect size for small art projects, coloring, playing legos, and puzzles.

Kids-Tabouret-Stacking-Chairs-Set-of-2-P14973716 I ordered these Tabouret Stackable Chairs in cotton candy to go with her white table.

The large wall in her playroom has multi-colored polka dots on it, so it’s already loud and fun. All I need is a fun piece of art for above her table. I have a few ideas in mind…

I’ll share photos of the room as it becomes less “bomb-went-off” and more “bomb.com”.

Around Here Lately

The freezing weather is starting to wear off, and the sun popped it’s head out for a few hours yesterday, so Camryn and I took full advantage and wandered down to our lake. We have never made the full hike down to our dock, which is just minutes away from our house but down a steep 1 mile long hill, until yesterday. I am so glad we did, because WOW, it’s beautiful. We picked up sticks along the way and sword fought, we walked along random trails and just talked about everything we saw, and we hung our legs off the dock and watched boats buzz by. It was one of those adventures that everything went right for. No fussing, no accidents, no ouches. I think we were both in need of some outdoor, peaceful, mommy-daughter time. It was bliss.

Day29

Seriously, she’s just such a cool kid. What a lucky Mommy I am.

I promise I’ll post the DIY market tomorrow, I was just having too much fun playing outside today. :-)

Hibernating

The indecisive weather here in Austin has forced Camryn and I into hibernation. We’re officially doing nothing that doesn’t involve staying in our jammies all day, snuggling and watching movies, drinking hot cocoa, or playing with toys. I made a “market” which has kept us very entertained. Her imagination runs wild these days, and it’s just so fun to watch her pretend to be a chef serving Mommy lunch, a “farmers market owner” selling me veggies, or my favorite “I’m just Camryn Reese, Mom!” I can’t wait to reuse our market as a lemonade stand this summer, or as a puppet theater when I make a curtain. Daddy’s favorite use is a kissing booth where he can buy smooches for a quarter. :-) DIY for this SUPER easy stand coming ASAP.

Day27option2 Sorry for the crappy iphone quality picture, but tell me that’s not a total cutie hamming it up in her “market”! She got to taste a Crush soda, her first soda ever, which made her grin from ear to ear. I’m going to make little tags that say “I have a CRUSH on you!” to attach to the sodas and give out with our cookies on V-day.

How cute is this “Embrace Messy Hair” sweatshirt from Grey Thread! Messy hair is right.

messyhair

We also did mani’s…

Day28 Rainbow nails made the freezing weather seem not so bad. Camryn always says “Paint my nails Mommy. I want green.” Always green…always. Rainbow was a nice change, but I’d paint those sweet little baby fingers any color, any day.

That’s pretty much our day in a nutshell. Like I said, we’re hibernating.

Travelling with a Toddler

cabo

whattopackMy sweet Camryn took her first flight at age 3 months. It was on my husbands birthday, entirely unplanned, and not a trip for pleasure. My Dad died, so quickly and without any time to plan or be worried about traveling with my teeny tiny baby, we boarded a 5 hour flight and headed to Washington. I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was for the first 4 1/2 hours…and then we started our descent. Her ears were clearly bothering her, and I wasn’t nearly as prepared as I should have been. I learned my lesson.

The day before her first flight. 3 months.

The flight home from Washington was a breeze, and I had prepared a bottle for the descent, which helps babies ears pop and prevents discomfort. I was lucky that she was still so young because all she really did at that age was sleep, which made flying a cake walk.

I had time to prepare for our next adventures…and boy have we been on some great trips!

Our view on our many trips to Washington

All of these trips were when Camryn was a baby, so traveling then and traveling with her now are two very different situations. I no longer need to pack a bunch of diapers, spare clothes, diaper wipes, or bottles. I DO however need to pack snacks, toys, and her Istax 8 mini camera so she can snap pictures of everywhere we go.

Here are my tips on traveling with a baby or toddler:

1.|| Bring the right carry-on bag. This is important! Make sure the bag you’re bringing is large enough to hold all the necessities, which include a spare outfit (because babies love a good blowout in the most inconvenient of times and places), diapers, wipes, food, bottles (you can get any formula or milk through security if it’s for your baby), extra pacifiers and wipes, toys, and extra bags for trash or to hold any “blown-out” outfits….lawd knows you don’t want those loose in your bag. ;-) I used to bring a small purse inside my larger carry-on bag to keep my personal items separate from everything else. Tip: Don’t bring a carry-on that’s too large to fit under the seat in front of you, or else all your necessities will be overhead and out of reach.

2.|| Stroller. Finding the perfect stroller for traveling isn’t easy. You want something light and compact, but functional in all places (you are traveling…). We chose the Maclaren Globetrotter because it fold down quickly, weighs very little, reclines, and was budget friendly. We needed something that would collapse very fast for jumping on and off of trains in Paris, and it did the trick.

3.|| Activities. For those of you with Ipads – AMEN!! That will be your saving grace, especially for long (international) flights. Camryn will watch movies and play games for hours on her ipad! We also really enjoy sticker books, coloring, and plenty of snacks. Target usually has “Play packs” in the $1 section, and they include a coloring book, crayons, and stickers. BUY THEM!

4.|| Other essentials include:

*water (because you do not want an open cup of liquid with a baby or toddler on/next to you)

*hand sanitizer

*stain removing wipes come in handy

*socks for both Camryn and I for the plane ride

*Camryn’s blanket and/or stuffed toy of choice

*facial cleansing wipes for long flights

*wisps (tooth cleansers)

*Extra Ziplock bags for trash or dirty clothing

*Backpack leash, if you’re concerned about busy airports, or if you want to wear your kid out by running around without fear of them getting too far ahead of you. I swore I would never use one of these, but they really are great, and Camryn LOVES hers. She puts all her snacks and toys in it.

We took our first LONG (international) flight in September to France:

Waiting on the Metro

The most frequent question I’m asked is “What do you do about the time changes, and jetlag?”. We’ve experienced a few hours time change here and there, but our trip to France was the first time I had ever really had to deal with jetlag and a NINE HOUR difference in time. Our flight left Texas at 4pm, and arrived in Paris at 8am, so we were lucky to start our day off in the morning. We didn’t sleep very well on the plane ride over, so we decided to take a few hours to nap and recover once we arrived to our hotel. We knew that if we slept for too long, we’d be wide awake all night, so we only allowed ourselves about 3-4 hrs. We were all very tired when we finally got up, but the excitement of seeing Paris perked us up. We had an early bedtime that night, and woke the next morning feeling 100%. I packed Melatonin tablets for all of us (safe to use for short periods of time, but check with your pediatrician before giving to a baby or toddler) but never needed them.

I hope this helps any of you getting ready to travel. Please feel free to ask any questions and I will be sure to answer. Happy travels. :-)

Friday Lust List: Handmade Kids Clothing & Accessories

Hello Loves!

So many of you ask me where I buy Camryn’s clothes, shoes, and accessories, and many times the answer is Target/Old Navy/H&M, etc…but some of my favorite items from her wardrobe are the ones I find from little shops on etsy, or discover through Instagram, or word of mouth. They’re handmade, many times using organic materials, and made with love. They are the pieces that last longer than any of the clothes from the “big box retailers”, they’re very high quality, and they’re the items that I plan to pass down to my future child(ren). I wanted to share a few of my recent favorite shops with all of you. Even if you don’t have a mini me, I’m sure you have friends and family with them, so check out these awesome shops – support small businesses – and shop my favorite items!

Day20

1.|| You saw Camryn rocking her Mason & The Tambourine dress a few days ago, as well as the grey teepee leggings. This shop is one of my newest loves, and I am definitely going to might want to buy one of everything. (My husband reads my blog, so I can’t give away too much… Hi honey! No shopping happening here.)

2.|| zuzii.com was recently introduced to me, and I can’t stop swooning over these black & white striped sandals. Why can’t these be in my size too? Oh, and I can’t forget this bow belt, it’s too cute for words. Must. Own.

3.|| Hello Apparel is always on my radar, but I’m especially eyeing those darling heart baseball tees for Valentines.

4.|| Loola popped up on my radar recently, and I fell in love with these floral harem pants (no longer available in size 2T…wahhhhh!). The prices can’t be beat ($15 for those adorable pants)! These pants would have looked so chic with those striped sandals from Zuzii.

I’m also loving these quilted tuxedo stripe pants from Loola. :-)

5.|| House of Mia has become dangerous for me to even look at these days. These heart leggings, the little black umbrella leggings, and the tiny models in them…I want it all. 100% organic, and 100% CUTE!

6.|| Monroe & Harlow is a company I started stalking on Instagram, and now check in on daily to see what cute new designs they’ve dreamed up. My current favorite is this beautiful black & white striped band with a mint bow. Lucky you, they also carry a women’s line – check out these gorgeous turbans – I would rock one of these all the time!!

7.|| I recently made a few purchases with Grey Thread, an etsy company with quirky sayings on shirts and sweatshirts that are sure to catch attention. My favorites are “Embrace Messy Hair”, “Wild & Free”, and the funny “Jesus Saves, Bro” shirt.

8.|| Vonbon is releasing their new leggings line in early February, and I sneaked a peek and am smitten! These will quickly sell out, so mark your calendars. If you want to read more about my love affair with Vonbon, check out my full post here.

9.|| Sugarplum Lane is another shop I’ve been frequenting, and I’m currently lusting over these beauties. I’m a sucker for all things gold, but it’s the thickness and quality of sugarplum’s leggings that I love most.

10.|| No list about toddler fashion could ever be complete without mentioning Freshly Picked Moccs. You all know I love them, and my kid practically lives in them, but did you know they’ve released a radiant orchid pair in honor of the Pantone Color of the Year?! Oh yes Mamas, feast your eyes on those beauties!!! If you’re a lover of Freshly Picked like I am, check out Shark Tank tonight, and see if Susan cuts a deal with any of the sharks!

Let’s be honest, it’s hard not to love everything in teeny tiny size! Let the shopping commence. (I can say that now because there’s no way my husband’s still reading…he got lost somewhere between shoes and headbands.) :-)

I’m Back!

It feels like forever since I’ve sat in front of my computer {eating chocolate chip & oatmeal raisin cookies…} and blogged. Ahhhh it’s good to be home!

Sunset at 30k ft on the flight home to Austin

First off, my trip was great! I got to see a bunch of friends and their littles, and I rubbed a TON of baby bumps. ALL of my girlfriends (yes, I’m being a tad dramatic) are pregnant! 5 baby bumps in total…which is actually a good thing, because that’s 5 sweet little babies that I’ll be snuggling in just a few more months. My ovaries have officially exploded, and all I say to my husband anymore is “I NEED A BABY!!!”

My SIL’s baby shower was so fun, and they revealed they are having a boy! A BOY, people. I finally get to shop for, and dress up a little man. They had been hoping for a boy, so I’m super happy for them. Camryn is going to be so excited to have a cousin. She was already talking to my SIL’s belly and giving it kisses. She kept asking her to “take the baby out”, and we were having to tell her he wasn’t ready yet. :-)

We didn’t get home to Austin until after 1am, so Camryn and I slept in till 10, and then spent the day relaxing and enjoying the beautiful 80 degree Austin weather. What a nice change from the grey and cold weather we had in Washington!

Thank you all for being patient while I was away. I had planned on blogging and posting vacay pics all week, but travelling solo with a toddler requires a lot of stuff, and my laptop wasn’t going to fit in my carry-on. I had to rely on my FIL’s computer and my husbands macbook, and it just didn’t work out like I had planned.

Speaking of travelling with a toddler, I remembered to snap a pic of the things I pack in my carry-on bag for all of you who have been asking for tips. I’ll put together a post soon. After 4 countries and countless plane rides, I’ve come up with a system that works really well for us.

Whimsical Big Girls Room

My husband and I have been talking about moving Camryn into a big girl bed for a few months now, and I think it’s nearly time we actually made the transition. She currently sleeps in her toddler bed and has done great in it. We never have issues with her getting in and out of bed throughout the night, and she’s never fallen out of bed, so I feel safe moving her into something bigger. We have a full size bed for her, but I need to buy a new headboard and change up her room decor. I want to design a space that she can grow into for awhile, and that can have minor changes made without having to overhaul the entire room.

Here’s what I currently have my eyes on:

Screen Shot 2014-01-08 at 9.13.14 PM Anthropologies Great Meadow Wall Paper

To say that I’m in love with this wallpaper would be an understatement. It’s so whimsical, and reminds me of the Secret Garden. It’s the perfect artistic piece for any girls bedroom, and I know my tiny lady would think it’s pretty amazing. I also love having such a big palette of colors to work from, which will make changing small pieces in her room as she gets older really easy.

Here’s what Anthropologie says about the artist, Nathalie Lete:

“French art and designer Nathalie Lete works as a solo artist, creating paintings, ceramics, textiles, jewelry, books and toys centered on themes of fantasy, humor and childhood memories. With this limited edition, grand-scale floral mural, the artist awakens the child-like wonder in all of us, leading one to imagine what it might be like to be minute amid a verdant meadow.”

Camryn’s room is currently painted a light grey, which I’ll repaint in Benjamin Moore’s Swiss Coffee. This color is a beautiful creamy off-white, without any yellow tones.

swiss coffee I found a darling pink headboard at Costco

The photo does this headboard no justice. Here’s a photo of the headboard in a girls room designed by the uber talented Kristen of 6th Street Design School.

There is a large dark wood dresser that I considered painting, but because it’s such an expensive and well made piece, I might leave it. The dark wood might be a nice contrast to the otherwise bright and colorful room. The nightstand needs to take up little space, and not obstruct too much of the beautiful wallpaper…I’ll let you know when I find something.

Kids-Tabouret-Stacking-Chairs-Set-of-2-P14973716

I want to make Camryn a little desk area and I found these darling industrial chairs thanks to Erin of Candy Kirby Designs. They are exactly what I’ve been looking for.

I also found 2 beautiful rose gold polka dot pillows at HomeGoods. They look exactly like these, but in a rose gold coloring:

Camryn has a huge window seat (with storage – Hooray!) that I want to have a custom cushion made for. I want to pile on a bunch of pretty and comfortable pillows so her and I can lay and read books, watch the sunsets, and look at stars from her window.

I’ll keep updating as I make progress on her room over the next few months. If any of you have good decor suggestions like lighting, a nightstand, bedding, etc. then leave me comments below.

Tomorrow’s Friday, so go grab yourself a coffee and keep on truckin’, because I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. There’s also a new Camryn Daily photo up if you haven’t seen it already. We had a little rain yesterday, so we threw on our Hunter Wellies and puddle jumped for a bit. :-)

DIY Lace Elbow Patches

I came across this picture on Pinterest, and well, I fell in love and then realized I could easily DIY something similar. So off I went to Michaels to grab lace & fabric glue. I found one of Camryn’s old’ish sweaters that will be perfect for Valentines, and started DIY’ing away.

This is SO easy, and requires very few items. 1 roll of lace, fabric glue, scissors, and your shirt or sweater of choice.

DSC_0074

Cut your lace into the shape and size you need. Apply glue to sweater, and then place your lace on top. I used a small paint brush to add additional glue on top of the lace, just to seal everything together. The glue dries clear, is flexible, and can be washed (turn garment inside out).

DSC_0076

The glue takes 24 hours to fully set, but I’ll update with a picture of Camryn wearing it tomorrow. This was quick, easy, and cheap, and it will look so cute on V-Day. I’m tempted to go cut up one of my own sweaters and try to replicate the first image now…

Here’s a tutorial for adding wool elbow patches to a shirt or sweater.

Happy DIY’ing. XO – Samantha

Here are the pictures of Camryn wearing her sweater. :-)
